William Roberts - Quartermaster
William Roberts was born circa 1831 in Rochester, New York and enlisted on 16 April 1864 at the New York Naval Rendezvous as a Seaman for a 2 year enlistment[1].
Roberts was attached to the U.S.S. Tecumseh on 20 April 1864 as a petty officer with the rating of quartermaster. [2]
Roberts was one of the survivors of the sinking of the Tecumseh on 5 August 1864. He was picked up from the water by Acting ENS Henry Clay Nields' cutter from the Metacomet [3], [4].
Per his rendezvous index card, Roberts was next attached to the U.S.S. John P. Jackson and the U.S.S. Fearnot. He deserted from the Navy on 27 August 1865 [2].
